Builing a Gen 1 3S-GE Mon, 17 March 2003 10:51 Go to next message
Hi

Ive got a gen 1 3S-GE sitting in the shed and I was thinking of rebuilding it and dropping it in a ST162.

What would be the best way to get more power out of one of these things while keeping it reasonably reliable?

What I was thinking:
Aftermarket cams (272deg?)
hi compression pistions (10:1-11:1?)
Head work (Bigger valves?)
ST165 430cc injectors if neccisary?
Unichip or Haltec/Motec/Autronic depending on budget
2.0-2.5" exhaust + headers

Anything I havent thought of?

Any work required to the valve train to make one of these rev harder?

Also is this going to be worth doing compared to dropping in a newer version of the 3S-GE? My main concern with an imported motor is getting parts for later motors (Gen 3 and later) if I manage to blow it up.

TIA
Luke

Just drop a 3SGTE in , More power than you will ever get out of a N/A motor and very reliable .

I'd say a custom intake manifold is probably a good idea because the TVIS is pretty much garbage. The valves are already fairly large on those cars and it's a bit of a squeeze to make them much bigger.

I don't think you can use a Unichip with the standard factory ECU, you'd probably have to wire a whole new ECU in stand-alone.

Just some thoughts.

Thats what I originally wanted to do but I'm concerned about parts availability and cost for the BEAMS engine. My other concern is the compatibility of the engine, gearbox, loom and ECU with the ST162. Does anyone know what kind of modifications would be necessary for the conversion? I don't really want to do alot of cutting and splicing of looms.
