icon10.gif  4K-C Modification Ideas Please Thu, 21 August 2003 20:43 Go to next message
As i said in another thread, I -was- going to be doing up the 5K in my sedan i have, but it's going to be sold to give me some more saving money, as I purchased an 82 KE70 panelvan this week with the standard 4K-C in it.

So now im pondering ideas as to what to do with the engine in the van.

What type/size/brand etc turbo would be good for using on the 4K-C?

I went and saw Redcliffe Dyno today and one of the guys there said that going the turbo route is much better than the using gze charger, mainly because they wear out quicker, and to get maximum out of them you need to change a whole heap of other stuff, but done right a turbo setup will be better.

Any info that can help me out here, aside from the "chuck another engine in mate" etc, would be great, as i really dont know exactly what i want to do yet... though im not after a quarter mile monster, just something that can give me a nice push around the streets, and probably the odd strip run, and also pretty reliable.

cheers, matt

if you are going to turbo the standard 4k you would probably want to use a turbo like the size of the ones on import starlets.

when boosting a motor, you have to change the same things with an SC as with a turbo... well not exactly but:

for SC:
compression,
timing,
intake manifold (ideally),
crank pulley and SC bracket,
IC and plumbing,
fuel injection.

for turbo:
compression,
timing,
exhaust manifold and exhaust,
intake manifold (ideally),
IC and plumbing,
fuel injection.

not to mention internal mods you will need to do to the motor.

an SC will give you more torque than turbo from idle to maybe midway thru rpm range. a turbo will give you torque from maybe midway thru rev range to high in the range. it depends what you want to drive. a turbo has higher rpm capability since an SC robs power at an exponential rate, but the turbo has lag, which an SC does not.

maybe start looking thru Corky Bells books to give you a few ideas??

done right? done right they both will be great, but different characteristics.
an underdriven SC12, or a starlet turbo, as Alex said, will be about right.

you dont HAVE to fuel inject it.. makes life easier tho.

Yeah best bet would be to pick up a small turbo off a 1.6 or something and go from there Smile

true, don't HAVE to fuel inject it, but there are very cheap EFI setups around.
if you have suck thru, you can't have an intercooler.
if you have blowthru, you have carb sealing and fulling things to play with.
with EFI, you play with arrow keys Very Happy
the last thin gyou want to do is keep blowing motors from poor fuelling. and a blow thru carb and rising rate reg may cost as much as cheap EFI?
my thoughts anyways Wink

That should be amended to "barely acceptable results" and "relatively cheap". People used to play with suck-through turbo setups because fuel injection was expensive, not because it was any good. Of course fuel injection isn't expensive any more; you'd be nuts to waste your time with a suck-through setup in this day and age.

apparently id be looking at around 3k or so on top of the turbo setup etc... and i am kinda working on a small budget atm.. im not doing a full on monster car.. all i want is a nice amount of power, but also money left over to do other things like exterior and interior...

i supppose atm my budget for the whole lot extends to about 10k

Of course, thats if some mofo will give me a loan Very Happy
