MA61 Digi Dash problem... Sun, 15 February 2004 13:45 Go to next message
Honestly officer, I was doing 0kph, see, even the speedo says I was only going 0kph...How could I possibly be speeding?

Hi,

The digital dash on my supra seems to have given up somewhere...It works but it only reads 0 regardless of the speed of the car. Rest of the dash works fine AFAIK just the speedo...

Any ideas what it could be? Any possible quick fixes or am I gonna have to pull the whole dash out and get a crash course in automotive electronics on the fly?

Any suggestions appreciated...

Cheers,

Ben

A few possibilities:

Speedo cable has come lose at the back of the dash

Speed sensor has died

Speedo gears have died

Try here

http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM_MKII/be /BE_027.html

Look at the fault finding section for the Electronic guages.

I have something similar in mine, but it is intermittent, but with another dash installed it is fine, so it may be the speed sensor which I beleive is in the dash, but haven't found it yet.

One of the drivers to get the analogue dash installed !!!!

Cheers

Almost certainly a loose or broken speedo cable. I had this happen to me a couple of times.

there's an "L" bend in the speedo cable - and this is almost always where the ma61/ra6x/sa6x cable breaks.
You'll also be happy to know these are hard to come by, and expensive as hell from toyota Razz

Hmmm, interesting.

I had (actually have) the problem of an intermittent '0' reading in my digi dash.

As part of the fault finding, I installed another dash and the speedo worked without any problem, so I am assuming that the speed sensor in my original dash is a bit corrupt.

But having begun the conversion from Auto to manual, I disconnected the so called 'speedo elbow' and will have a good look to make sure that this is connected properly and try running the original dash again just to eliminate the above discussed possibilities

Cheers

Hmmmm, the mystery deepens.

Maybe a year dependant ?

Mine is a 11/83 bodyshell with a 1/84 Aus compliance plate.

Maybe it is just the way of the world !!!

Both mine were mid 84 build from memory, so that may be an explanation. Smile

My 86 Cressida has the bent one.
But the 82(ish) parts car me and frank had, had the cast alloy elbow.
ie, it wasnt a bent pipe like my Cressidas, but a sort of 2 piece thingamajig

The plot gets deeper

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions...I pulled the interior apart a couple of days ago and it was the speedo cable.

I jacked the car up on stands to see if the cable turned with the wheels turning while the dash was disconnected...Sure enough, it wasn't turning so i figured the problem was somewhere further along the cable...

Trace the cable back to the box, pull out the speedo gear to find some of the plastic teeth have worn away...problem diagnosed!

Funnily enough, I had a corona box lying around and substituted the said gear. They had the same amount of teeth and were visually the same so I put it in and it seems to work ok. End of problem, unless I get a speeding fine telling me otherwise Rolling Eyes

Thanks a lot people, I've said it plenty of times before but these forums are full of useful information and previous experience. Everyone seems nice enough too so putting forward problems is no daunting matter...

Cheers,

Ben
