Gearbox oil (W50)?

Hi guys...
Im trying to keep my run around car (Corona) going while im building up my RA28.
The W50 in it is quite hard to shift into 2nd when cold (perfect when hot), and always crunches quite badly into 3rd.
Everything else is ok.
Recommended oil is 80W/90... would i be better off using a thinner or thicker oil, or the recommended?
Thanks.

Thinner, use a straight 50 grade engine oil, or FWD manual box oil (60/70ish).

Would this help prolong the life of a W50 that has serious bearing-like vibration in third and fourth gear?
Cheers
