very ill 4age

my 4ag in my 86 is sick as a dog, wondering if someone could help me determine the problem. Here are the symptoms:
* Plenty of white smoke out of the exhaust
* sounds like a rotor/wrx he he\
* traces of oil was found in the sparkies
The car still turns on but it takes a while and sounds like poo.
I'm thinking it's the piston rings, but any help would make the job easier.
cheers aussie 86

ummmm... sounds a little worse than a map sensor.
possibly rings - but given that you said it doesn't sound good (i'm assuming you meant that) it will prolly be a little more in depth than JUST piston rings...

Could be that your head gasket is blown or your only running on 3 cylinders

Could be a few things,
When did it start doing it? What were you doing before hand?
It sounds like one or two of your cylinders isn't firing. If you were driving and all of a sudden noticed a loss of power and it idling like a harley, then I'd say it's your head gasket. It's possible to blow a chunk out between a cylinder and a water track, which you'd notice water in your oil and vice versa. And it's possible to blow a chunk out between cylinders, which you'd have no water in your oil, but no compression and hence no firing on two of your cylinders.
Or, If you just washed your car (and engine) you might have a well of water in your plug holes.
Or, If you've had the leads off, you might have them around the wrong way.
If you had done nothing before and it happened all of a sudden, my money would be on the head gasket. Most electrical problems happen intermitantly before becoming a full blown problem.
Cheers,
Dave

I can vouch for that fact,
Im not 100% sure whats wrong with the 4age but im betting no ignition of fuel for whatever reason, blown head gasket or busted dizzy.

it's one of the first tyhings i do when i suspect a motor is sick.. and it's as easy as removing spark plugs...

the plugs on my stupid engine take effort(removing intake pipe)
so its not THAT easy
sort of on topic
when other people have experienced a blown head gasket, did the engine shake around alot?

That's what happened to me, engine was running fine one day & barely running the next.
I had a similar symptoms with my 4AFC, white smoke/steam from the exhaust, really hard to keep a steady idle, sounded like a 2 stroke and had no power (nah, that last part was normal). Suspected blown head gasket...
And Cyber-punk, yep mine did.

My 4age was idling really rough due to a cracked injector seal, but the white smoke tends to point to oil being burnt.
Generally smoke on acceleration means rings, on decelleration (engine braking) means valve seals.
That's what i've been told, anyway
