TA22 Reconditioned Steering Boxes Tue, 04 January 2005 14:24 Go to next message
Seen a few threads talking about TA22 steering boxes being worn and needing reconditioning. Don't know if this is of any help but Fulcrum Suspension sell reconditioned boxes for around the $300 mark and they come with a 60000km warranty. This is all from my incredibly dodgy memory so you would be best off checking with Fulcrum rather than take the above figures I have mentioned as gospel. Cheers.

well stock from factory the TA22 steering box should have about 2-5deg play before the wheels turn... on my celica its bout 15-20deg before the wheels turn so you can imagine how much i have to turn to get it round a corner Rolling Eyes

with my current celica the alignment guy gets the shits when i bring it in cuase it takes him ages to really get it straight as but he does an awsome job

with the recod box it should be nice and tight otherwise you can go for a rack and pinion setup with a couple mods to get it in... the other option is to get the box recod to your specs by getting the size changed instead of having it stock, this will obviously change the difficulty of turning and the final turning circle but depending what you want from the car in respect to turning then the stock is fine

i might give them a call when i get to that stage... i wonder if he will trade? i got 3 steering boxes here, ill give the 2 for one new one Very Happy

You guys obviously do not have annual rego inspections, or you have found some real dodgy guys to pass your cars. Steering with that much play, is dangerous!

regards Chuck.

no annnual inspections in queensland Razz so once the car is registered it is neva checked again, apart from the occasional queensland transport mobile inspection vehicle doing the rounds.

i agree with u that it is very dangerous especially when u get blown across the road by an oncoming truck's wind Surprised but the dato ute aint my car so meh, not my problem

well the steering does not get checked for rego. all the steering components are checked to ensure they are on right, no rust at those areas, tie rods, control arms and what not but they dont actually jump in and turn the steering and reject it cause the wheels dont turn how they want.

also unless your a specialist in toyotas how would you know what the play from factory is. i found out the play values from a guy who works for toyota and loves the cars. Like Rod (thetoyman75) he knows practically everything bot them too

besides when you are aware of an imperfection in your car then you know what to do in certain situations. like the truck for example, when i see one coming past or what ever i already know whats going to happen so i am prepared for it

I found a few things about the rack and pinion conversion using the search function, not much though. Under keywords type "rack and pinion" or "Mazda 323". Hope this helps.

joel (TurboRA28) has rack and pinion on his car probably give him a PM and he could be able to guide you. also in members rids i believe under joels thread there are pics and some details bout his conversion... though the wheel bases are different between a '22 and his car

in regards to Mazda 323 apparently the wheel base is almost identical and would be the easiest conversion for rack and pinion in a '22. the only problem there is that i dont know what model 323 it is. if you can get your hands on 323 data sheets and find the one with a rack and pinion setup and the closest wheel base to the '22 then thats the one you want

hope this helps you out a bit

As far as I remember, the Mazda 323 you want is the original late 70's one, I think 78-80 the rounder one, before they became angular and were shared with Ford as Lasers.

And, has anyone checked with Fulcrum Suspensions to see if they still do recond. steering boxes ?

Cheers,
Mitch.

i doubt a weekend is enough. first you gaoot get the RnP, measure it up, fabricate a seat for it to sit on that would more than likely be welded to the engine cross member, get it sitting at the right height and in the right position, then get tir rod ends to suit the RnP and the steering arms on the control arms, then theres the fabrication of a rod with uni joints to bolt on to the steering column

so f you have a welder and all the parts then for sure you can do in a wekend otherwise NOT
