7MGE head bolt torque sequence Sun, 17 April 2005 22:58 Go to next message
The chiltons manual I have suggests that the head bolts be torqued in a sequence that starts near the back of the engine and then moves to the front and then slowly converges to the middle. This is the opposite to virtually every engine I have ever come across before. Most start in the middle and work to the ends in a sort of spiraling fashion. This method avoids buckling of the gasket in the middle as it is torqued down.

Any comments ?

The toyota manual I printed off the net and all the 4M 5M manual's I have say to do it from the centre outwards. This is the way i did my 7M with factory HG and my 2 4M's and haven't had a problem.

I would start from the centre and work outwards.

Thanks mate. I agree with you 100%. I think this is a mistake which I saw repeated on a NZ based supra forum. See this link.

Did you retorque your head bolts after 1000kms?

If so do you recommend just retorqueing or slightly loosening and then retorqueing one at a time?

I have bought a nice long 10mm allen key socket and I have a torque wrench so I should be ready to go.

Thanks for the tips.

I retourqued mine after 1000 or so km's.

My head guy just said to nip them up, I didn't back them off. Sure unenough some of them took my of a turn then what I thought they would.

As I said I haven't head a problem and I didn't exactly drive my car easily.
