Hi guys, just new here.
Got a 18rc with the 18RG 88230 head, now i think ive got a slight problem, i checked my timing and when i spin the crank over theres about 12 degrees lag before the cams start moving.
what is exactly required with the 88230 head on the 18rc block, also what timing chain kit do i use??
im pulling it apart at work tomoro to see whats exactly wrong.
thank

there are "ROLON" replacement chains available for them and they arent too dear.
if you ar still using your origional 18rc pistons then its gunna have VERY low compression even lower than an 18rc i would expect
the 88230 18rg's need the high compression to give them any power

i bought this off a member of these forums.
im not sure what was done, just i got a lota play on the crank.
i cleaned and tuned the twin solex carbs and it seems to fly when i took it for a drive.
just my boss doesnt like how theres so much play between the crank and cams.

is the timing chain loose?
maybe adjust the timing chain tensioner? this could be loose when the motor is stopped. it is hydraulic though and probably tightens up when oil pressure comes.
does it rattle much, when starting, or all the time?
theres a big bolt head on the left hand side of the head. there a little hole in the middle of it. using a screw driver you can push up this hole and feel the slack in the timing chain. adjust the big bolt until you have about 1.5mm of play.
if you have 18rg head on 18rc block, i hope you have 18rg pistons and oil pump at least.

of course it'll go better with the RG head, but 110 is appauling, should be 170 minimum,

my 18rgU i tested the comperession and it was ~150psi
that was after 20 mins runniong since the rebuild so id reckon i would be a bit higher now its run in

170 for 18RG with 9.7, althouth there is no direct correlation between static compression and a compression test, 150 is ok for 8.7:1

so if im getting 110psi could that mean the RG pistons havent been used?
once i get it registered it will be rebuilt anyway. but as it is its still pretty quick, has no hassles frying the rears

when i was pulling apart one 18rgeu, i noticed the small tensioner at the bottom of the block (common to 18rc's and 18rg') was actually stuck all the way in. this motor was completely shafted by the way.
it is however the first thing that popped into my head when you said there was a lot of slack from the time you moved the crank to the time the cams started moving.
.....although another thought also......
other theory is the engine rotates in a clockwise direction facing from the front of the car and if you are rotating it by hand after it has finished running and you rotate the engine in an anticlockwise manner then it would slacken the timing chain off before tightening again possibly even by about ~12 degrees...
umm compression could be down due to timing on exhaust and intakes being out by a bit...????
and i just got just over 150psi using 88251 pistons (8.7 i think) after rebuilding mine with an old 18rc block so mr. DOHC is right on the money i would say.

somethings really not right ehre though
i can take 1 and 4 lead out and it doesnt change anything, yet if i block 1 4 carb off it stalls.
if i take out 2 or 3 it stalls.
yet it sounds like it idles fine and drives fine. doesnt sound like its on 2 cylinders at all
