Has anyone installed one on their car?
I was just wonderin if any body knows how huge the difference is between the $400 ones off ebay and the $1500 from repco or bursons.

There are only two types of HID kits you should concern yourself with... the ones that are legal and the ones that aren't.
The legal ones have a self levelling system for the beam and all the ones I have seen with this feature are supplied as car specific kits.
The not so road legal units are all the ones that look just like a standard halogen bulb but come with invertors / ignitors etc.
The not so legal units vary in quality greatly, however, unless you are going to use them on your show car its not worth explaining the difference.

Yea I think I got the not so legal ones. They come with a few boxes. Ignitors, relays and resistors. Its a very white light with the slightest of slightest purple tinges. I doubt a cop would pull me over for it.
But you say that these are illegal for sure in Vic?
You say that no aftermarket ones are legal on the road?

The ones that are a "conversion" kit do not pass ADR's.
Something to do with ADR 46/00 and the "Auto Levelling" feature required of HID lamps.
See Narva's page for an example.
http://www.narva.com.au/Globes_24.html
The ones that are full headlight assemblies can be ADR complaint.

Shouldn't be a problem until you have an accident or are involved in an accident at night.
Insurance companies will screw you sideways if they inspect your car after an accident and find a non ADR legal headlight setup.

CTP, TPP, Comprehensive... doesn't really matter.
If an insurance company (or any company for that matter) can see a way to avoid paying a claim then they that is all they are concerned about... ethics, morals etc. all go out the window with insurance companies.
Look at what happened when that old guy crashed into a pre-school... the CTP insurance company refused to pay because the courts found the guy innocent of neg driving.
Now if they refuse to pay out on a highly publicised case because of a technicality then I doubt they will even think twice when some "Hoon" with his highly modified HID racing headlights on his 3k powered ke20 with toyoglide transmission smacks into a hoard of pedestrians at night.
