Rear wheel kw --> fly wheel kw ? Fri, 05 August 2005 05:38 Go to next message
What is the adopted conversion for rwkw to engine kw that is adopted most commonly.

I want to convert 229rwkw to engine output and I get different people using different conversions?

most mags take a 30-25% drive train loss as common though these days the figures are dropping (diff/dodgy dyno) ie GTS commo stock putting out 240rwkw.
so lets assume 25% thats means your SS ute has 305.3333333kw at the fly wheel.
At 30% loss it would be 327kw

So the 1/3 (or 33%) loss isn't used much any more.

not that i know of i always use 30% when doing quick calcs and thats pretty much bang on what was happening at SAS for the dyno day ie 71.4fwkw put out by a stock 100kw 4ag.
My car put out 63.2rwkw and rated at 87kw at flywheel.
Mind you in one motor hot tuner issue they had an ss flash tuned and the dyno read 228rwkw stock (dodgy) but it was fast for a stock ss and after the flash tune (an extra 18rwkw) it dropped into a high 12 second quarter.

at 30% loss thats bang on 245kw is it a Vy series 2 cos that be whats its supposed to be putting out. But meh i wouldn't really trust a lot of dyno figures 170 sounds about right for a stock gen 3 ss motor though, i have seen the results for a few street commodores dyno days and most put out around that figure.

Ta. I'm doing some touch up work and am wanting to put a "320" badge on the tailgate + plus some bling wheels. so I can justify the price.

i have always adopted the approach 1hp at the wheel equals 1kw at the fly

That assumes a 25% drivetrain loss, which is about right.

I go for 25% for auto's, 20% for manuals.

Also they heavier the drivetrain, the more the loss.
ie, a G-series diff will loose slightly more power than an F-series, because it has to turn more mass.

or you can take the engine out and get it engine dynoed and you will know the real HP your car has,not tuning HP.
