hi all
the sprintah has a really shitty aftermaket tint on the side windows, bubbles and all. i definately want to get rid of it, looks crap and i dont think cams are too happy about aftermarket tints either.
its very thin flakey stuff, doesnt peel off like a sticker would, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it off effectively? anyone done this before?
cheers

steam it off.
it gets really messy really quick (water everywhere) but its fast, tint-a-car can clear off 5 windows in about 10 minutes with steam lol.

oh and a good way to remove any residual glue is double D eucalyptus oil, you will probably get high of the stuff though good for a blocked nose.

I recommend a citrus based cleaner - much better than the double D oily crap.
Still, double D sounds good............

Easiest way (from personal experience) is to get hold of a steamer and use it to soften / moisten the tint and then use a blade to lift the edge of the tint and gently peal it away. The steamer needs to both heat and wet the entire film to ensure no glue residue is left sticking to the window.
DO NOT use a razor blade on your rear window defroster lines unless you don't want them to work ever again.
If you take your time and apply enough steam, the old tint will peal away in one piece and leave very little glue residue.
The best way to then clean the glass is with a gentle scouring pad and a little bit of detergent and a bit of elbow grease. Then rinse off with water and dry with a clean lint free towel.
Put towels on your rear parcel shelf, as it will get quite damp otherwise - same goes for door trims - either remove them , or tape plastic over any power window switches etc..
It will take you anywhere from about 30 mins to 2 hrs to remove the tint - depending on how good the steamer is and how sticky the glue is...
You can hire the steamers from Kennards and similar places - get the small wand based ones as they are easier to get into the corners..

I had a lot of success with just a heat gun, although there's a fine line between hot enough to melt the glue and hot enough to melt the tint
A razor blade was used to remove the little bit of residue glue.
Mine was double tinted and hence pretty tough, this method may not be good for your old tints.

From a windscreen specialist:
Never use a scouring pad on glass.

Never had a problem with any of my windows.
(unless we have different ideas of what a gentle scouring pad and detergent is..)

My windscreen guy (18 years on the job), tells me that scouring pads will put fine scratches into the glass, leaving a clouding effect.
Panel shops use scouring pads to prep panels prior to repaint.
Southo, yeah your gentle scrub might work for you, but may not work for someone else. Different blokes different strokes.
cheers Chuck.
