Can I safely run my car to empty ?

The motor is a 1GGTE and my old man put the wrong fuel in so i was going to run it out of petrol .
I'd also do it when i fill it up one day to see how much i can get out of a tank.
If anybody has done it before did it do any damage ?
can i just fill it back up and it will run ok ?
