I have read in one archive that it can be done by simply making an adapter plate and shaving the w50 bellhousing. Has anyone do this conversion? and what things do you need to look out for?

Not too much, still in the planning stage really.
Rex has the two sitting together and just looking for a spigot bearing, apparently the 4AG one works perfectly.
After looking at it at length I've concluded that its not hard at all, just need to be precise, have a couple of special tools and able to cut lots of metal.
Not to mention being able to laep tall building in a single bounds ...

sebta22, I have constructed an alloy adater plate, for a 4AGE engine, and a 1GG-FE six speed box.
This is how I went about it:
500 x 500 x 12mm aluminium alloy, (sorry forgot the grade)
Draw a few right angle grid lines on the alloy plate.
Find centre of plate, and attach a 1/4" drive socket to the plate, the socket has to be a good fit on the spigot part of the gearbox input shaft.
Lower the larger gearbox complete with bellhousing onto the plate, the socket will centre the gearbox on the plate. Trace around the bellhousing using a scriber, mark all bolt holes.
It is quite critical that you establish some sort of alignment between the 2 bell housings, as you will have to determine which bolt holes will be used to attach the plate to the engine, and which bolt holes will attach the bellhousing.
You then repeat the centreing and scribing with the smaller of the gearbox/bellhousing combo's.
Now for the tricky bit, you have to determine which is the best way to support the front of the gearbox input shaft, (1)double row ball bearing?,(2) cut the W bellhousing back?
Option 1, appeals, but what happens to the throw-out bearing, as it slides forward on the input shaft sleeve?.
Option 2, take too much meat off the bellhousing, and you will weaken the structure.
My solution, use both methods in conjunction, take 6mm off the bellhousing, and install the double race bearing.
The attachment of the adapter plate to the engine, requires that the bolts be of the countersunk variety, with appropriate countersinking of the holes. I used allen key head countersunk bolts.
This setup has yet to be powered up, but I am confident that it will work.
Hope this helps in some way, regards Chuck.
