well, it aint that bad because there are no collapsible columns to damage
loosen the nut off a little bit (like 1mm gap between nut and washer) not too much so you don't whack your nose..
hold onto one of the horizontal bits from the centre to rim, pull back on it, and whack the same position on the other side, so you sort of forcefully lever it off. you can put a fair bit of effort into it and it should come off...
the dodgy way is to loosen the nut to only just loose (still on the spring washer) and drive around a bit till it loosens
good luck.

oooohhh, thats what ya meant..
to get the horn pad off, hold it at the outer edges, maybe 1-2" from the ends and prise off with ya fingers.... do one side at a time.. it has a plastic thingy that goes over a bolt head (effectively) so you have to pull it just enough to pop off.. screwdrivers aren't good... you just need to sort of stick your fingers in and use them to expand the gap between the pad a wheel? that makes sense?
there is only 1 retaining point per side, and try not to yank one side out too much before lifting off the other side, or it can break...
i don't have one here to take a pic of ... sorry...
