DISNEY DVDS TO SELF-DESTRUCT

Consumers are to be offered disposable DVDs that are rendered useless 48 hours after they open the package.

The Buena Vista Home Entertainment division of Walt Disney Company will test the novel product, branded EZ-D, in test markets from August. EZ-D incorporates a 'flexible time play' technology, developed by New York-based Flexplay Technologies, into a standard DVD. The technology is the result of a two-year collaboration between Flexplay and GE Plastics, which developed a new Lexan resin co-polymer that makes the flexible time play design possible.

The disposable DVD's 48-hour viewing window starts as soon as the disc is removed from its packaging. Consumers can then watch the film as many times as they like before it becomes unreadable in the DVD player. The first films available on EZ-D include The Recruit, Rabbit Proof Fence, The Hot Chick, 25th Hour, Heaven, Equilibrium and Signs. EZ-D is aimed at consumers who find renting films inconvenient.

"This is a great opportunity for us to test consumer receptiveness to this new product in a live market setting," said Bob Chapek, president of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. "We believe consumers will enjoy the benefits of EZ-D without the inconvenience of making extra trips, returning movies and paying late fees."

John Dineen, vice president and global Lexan business leader for GE Plastics, said: "This is exciting new technology that can help revolutionise and expand the DVD marketplace. We are fully committed to maximising this technology globally."

woohoo no more late rentals, but wonder what it will cost?
