Why do I wear out so many tyres??

I have a big issue with my car...it chews out tyres. I've had 2 wheel allignments done and still hasn't made things any better. My rear tyres were looking quite average so I put some on with about 50% tread. I drove normally on smooth roads for 400k's and yesterday I thought I had chalk on my tyres....it turns out that it was the steal and stuff showing through! They were slicks and on the very inside there was wire showing through. I looked at the other side and it was wearing out heaps in the middle as well...not quite as badly.
Could the suspension be stuffed and make the tyres do this?? Would it do it to this extent? Has the car been in a crash at some point and everything is out of allignment? Wouldn't a wheel allignment help show this up?
I am putting 18's on this weekend and don't want to wear out expensive tyres in 1 trip again. it's costing me a fortune.
Oh and one other thing. There is some gravel on intersections in town and even when driving over them at 40-50k's an hour it skips the rear end of the car out. It's like the front is wanting to go a different way to the back.
Also when I reverse out of my drive way and I start to turn the wheels the 2 front tyres are pointing in different directions it seems and it really bangs and jumps across the road. Only when I have the car at any sort of lock.
Thanks for reading my problems and I really need to get this fixed. I can't afford to keep the car as it is....$1200 in tyres every few weeks!!!!!!!!
