Hi,
I have a Canadian 5 speed 1993 Tercel DX with the sadly anemic 3EE motor, which is old and very tired. I would like to swap in something with a little more spunk, but even a 4AG requires cutting and more custom work than I find reasonable for a daily driver that will never be a race car and 5E-FEs are rare around these parts.
However, I recently drove a 2001 Toyota Echo (the North American name... I think it's called a Yaro elsewhere) with the 108hp/105lb.ft 1NZ-FE with VVT-l and was very impressed. I have since done some digging and found that a complete clip featuring this motor is certainly reasonable in price and the physical dimensions seem very close.
The problem is that I can't determine if these cars use the same transmission to avoid screwing around with custom driveshafts. I have found sources that claim both cars use the C150 and sources saying that the Tercel uses the C52. The C52 is found in FF 4/7A-FE Corollas and I have found evidence that the A series motors will NOT bolt to the Tercel transmission without an adaptor. Thus, I am hoping that the C52 information is wrong.
Can anyone help? Basically, the question is this: what transmission comes in the 3EE Tercels and will the 1NZ bolt to it without adaptation?
While I'm at it, are there any other reasons why this is a bad idea? I know that the 1NZ uses direct ignition and that this will make the wiring a PITA (and my rev counter will need to be adapted for DLI), but I am willing to deal with that if everything else will fit.
Thanks in advance.
