Powersteering squeeks Wed, 18 June 2003 07:55 Go to next message
Hey all...
This has been bothering me quite a bit as of late.
So I need to ask what I should do.

Anyway, when my car is started up and its cold...if I try turn the steering wheel, makes a squeek noise. Today I decided to find out what was causing the noise...so I got my sister to turn the wheel so I could check to see what was happening.

Found out that when she turned the wheel heaps (loud squeek) the belt (I pressume ps belt) would move - I think due to the fan turning the belt and the pulley thing would stay still. Then with the wheel centred and not moved, it would turn as per normal.

The steering works perfectly fine when the car is warm and can even do a perfect full turn...only happens when the car is cold. I figure the belt is like loose or something, but it seems ok.

What could the problem be???

Thanks.

Have you checked power steering fluid levels?

If its only on full lock dont worry about it ..... most cars do that on full lock.... even when the cars warm too...

its just your pressure relief valve im pretty sure

Happens when the car is cold. ALWAYS!!!
Sometimes it doesnt happen when I just start the car, but when I turn my lights on, it starts squeeling.

I think it has something to do with the belt.

I'm pretty sure its the belt...and it seems ok...but how would I go about tightening it?
I gave it a shot and theres nothing I can move to make the belt tight.
I think I'll have to take it somewhere to get it done.
I'd like/prefer to do it myself though.

If the belt is tight....dont tighten it

find the longest part of the belt....in the middle of it try and twist it.....u should NOT be able to twist it more than 90 degrees

if its tight and still squeaking

a)who cares....turn up the radio while your car is cold

b)replace it

c)lubricate the belt.....with wd-40...or anytihng like that.....even tyre shine works...but this is only temporary

This is assuming the problem is the belt

Definitely a loose or worn belt. Tighten or replace.

Check your service manual for the belt tightening procedure. If you don't have one, buy one.

Take it to a mechanic to have a belt tightened? Pfft, ya girl! Razz
