question 1
how the hell did rust manifest in my fuel tank????
took my car for a bit of a fixin' and findout i have rust causing all sorts of trouble in my fuel tank.
changed fuel filter and purged the fuel lines using some sort of pump. all that came out was an orange red liquid. the rust is killing my fuel pump so it's difficult to drive.
question 2
can i fix it?
its a big problem, i know, but anything anyone can suggest will be appreciated

that sounds eville.. what sort of car are we talking?
if any water gets into your tank (from condensation, from the servo if they were running low etc) then it will stay on the bottom of the tank, cos it's heavier. it will sit there and happily eat away at your tank till it gets drained out..
everytime i've been in a light plane, the pilot always bleeds water out of the fuel tanks befor etake off... sometimes gets up to 500mls or so!!
if the inside of the tank is rusted, there is not much you can do, it will keep rusting unless you get it coated with something... bext bet is to swap it for a good one. will save you endless bother..
can ya get the inside of tanks coated?? anyone heard of that?
you could always get a stainless one welded up, for a few $$$$

Have you got a drain plug on your tank? if so drian it.
And wheres your fuel pump? disconect one of the line and put it in a bucket or something and it will all squirt out.
If it is well rusted save your self the future dramas get a second hand one or better yet get a drop tank.
you could get one fitted for about $700 if its a fck around $900
or keep changing your fuel filter till all the shit is gone but if it is well rusty it wont - hence the differnt tank.

what a crap week its been.
i find a bit of body rust under the scuffplate.
and plowed my car into the ground on a muddy driveway. this driveway had crushed tiles as aggregate btw... good bye immaculate $3000 paintjob.
what is a drop tank? sounds like something you find on a jet fighter plane.
got plans to change the tank in the future, then the pump. all this has to be done before engine transplant. this problem is forcing the plan to go ahead sooner than anticipated though...
was thinking of upgrading the pump to one that would support a small turbo engine since they dont come in a half cut. any suggestions or leads to where i could look for prices?
i've seriously contemplated about selling and buying another car but i wont get more than 6k for it. so i might aswell keep it and keep upgrading parts until i get old and cranky
the car in question is a 90 capri. not flash but hey, beats public transport.
i think the pump is under the rear passenger shelf, might be an internal, havent actually seen it yet. i wouldnt know where to look for the drain plug but i'll have a look tomorrow and see if there is.
your replies are greatly appreciated!

Bosch pump (VL Turbo) is top choice for most around here I think.
Do a search and you should find part numbers and stuff like that.
Sorry to hear about the paint job.
I haven't even seen the car since it got resprayed!!

a drop tank is a polished steel fuel tank that replaces the old crapy one the things that are on the back of the v8supercars.
They look the biz.
And wouldnt a plastic fuel tank melt?
