apparently a friend told me you can revalve them so you can make them more stiffer then other shocks out there on the market for a hella lot less. good for winding roads and those kind of things.

Yeh i have KYB red shocks in my ra28, with king springs lowered 1 1/2"... it was the best upgrade ive done!!
Shocks cost me around $340-350 for the set..
Was an excellent investment for the considerable improvement in anti-roll, turn in, and general firmness of the ride. Will always recommend them to people who want a good shock for quite a competetive price, or just in any suspension upgrade.
Can vouch for king springs too, they seem to have held up quite well for me, and also have a fairly stiff spring rate..
Yeh im a lover of driving through the hills and windy roads.. hehe
Love the feel of the car with this setup, glad i spent the money on some quality parts.

my car is a AE86, with custom made springs,
cant remember what model the shocks were, like i said i think they were the cheapsest and are non adjustable. (EDIT: yeah, they were gas supressed ones)
i got strut inserts for the front, and shocks for the back.
i really have to get new springs, but i will get short stroke shocks this time.
i changed springs/shocks in an afternoon, only mistake i made was leaving a front bumpstop out (put it back in)
just be sure to get a wheel alignment soon after you lower, i didnt and the inside corners of the tyres wore off pretty fast.

I can definately vouch for the KYB's! They are an excellent shock absorber, I have a set in my Ae82 running on Lovell's and they are fantastic

cool!
front strut inserts?
and do you mean fit, or "fit"
i read somewhere that early rx-7 shocks work on the rear end, and are shorter.
ill have to look into that, thanks!

wow, thanks heaps.
the only thing missing in the list is prices
so the pug rear shocks (strut inserts) screw into the front struts of the AE86?? you would need to put a spacer under the cartridge right?
or are these replacents for the rear shocks only?
cheers

no in that list the parts for fronts only fit in the frotn and the parts for the rear likewise.
so.. the 505 will fit in the rear of the ae86 only
505 kyb's perfect.. the 505 is a bloody heavy car!

simon,
do you have the above insert specs for the:
ra60 celica
ra65 celica
ma61 supra
im currently dropping a pair of ra60 struts into the ma61 (more camber ) and have a funny feeling that the ra60's inserts might be iterchangeable with the AE86 / 505 pug insert. the supra has been droped anout 35mm at the front, and could do with a shorter stroke shock.
any idea what the 505 weighs? ie similar to the 1300kg of the supra? more? i doubt a standard AE86 shock in a supra would be too pretty...
the 505, if damped enough, could be interesting..
cheers

ahhh crap, just realised you were talking about the rears...
still, data on the 505 weight/damping would still be good, as too if youve got insert data on the above...

so the 505 shock only applies to the rear of the car? im more concerned with the front for now, as it is easier to do dodgy things in the back (like seat-belt drop limiting ala rally cars)
i just need (ideally) 2 inch shorter stroke shocks front and back, so i dont have to use "progressive rate" springs.
i dont know how dodgy it would be to either cut and reweld 2 inches out of my current (or new) shocks, or cutting and re-threading them. better to get the proper deal though, id say.

cutting OEM struts is neither dodgy or ineffective so long its done right.
i am currently in the process of Modifying my RA40 struts that are in my ae86. They already have had the spring platform cut off and a coil over sleve put in, whoever did it put 400 pound springs in which are also fairly high, with a RA40 monroe *shudders* gas shock rated too 100 pounds.
in other words... the spring is killing the shit shock.
So, i plan to take the RA40 shocks out and fit a AE92 shock which is some 60 something mm shorter. that would mean cutting 60 mm out of the strut tube, lining it back up and then rewelding it with a seleve, done correctly it will be stronger then an OEM strut.
HOWEVER, i have a few probs so far and wheel offset clearance is one fo them. I will have to fit RA60/MA61 (are they the same?) front hubs, disk and calipers which will give me an axtra 7mm offset, then a spacer.
505's weigh a good 1350 kgs i believe, they have excellent rebound rates!
i'll see if i can find the specs for you tho!

A word of warning for those getting the KYB rear shocks. I got the ones for a RX7 and the metal sleeve does not come out of the rubber bush. So make sure the shock that you are getting fit over the lower shock mount. KYB moulds them together making removal difficult.

i meant cutting the shock shaft, not the strut tube, i dunno if this would be too dodgy or not. wouldnt bee s obad on the back, but if you broke the shock shaft on the front, it wouldnt be pretty.
