Celica Won't Start

Tonight i was driving my car, and as i went to accelerate out of a roundabout, i felt no power. My first reaction was that my friend had pulled the hand brake, but he hadn't. A few seconds later i realised that the revs were zero, so i figured i must have stalled it. I tried to start the car, and it's ticking over, and because of what happened, i'm sure it's not the starter motor. I got RACQ out, who checked my battery, oil, water, then tried injecting fuel straight into the engine, in case the fuel pump didn't work (which is what i thought was the problem, not that i know much), but that didn't work. The guy admitted that he didn't know much about celica engines though (another holden boy).
Basically what can I do, what else can i check. The RACQ guy checked the first spark plug and it was firing.
Thanks alot guys.
The car is a 1990 Toyota Celica with 5SFE Engine (same as camry)
