When I bought this car it had a blown head gasket (7M's commonly have this problem). I completed a full engine rebuild of the 7MGTE during winter of 2003. I fitted new rings and bearings, and all new gaskets. I had the bores honed, and the block and head was resurfaced. The rods were closed and honed to get the bearing clearances perfect and the crankshaft was checked for straightness (only .001" runout) . The head has new valve guides and the ports lightly cleaned up but not enlarged. To prevent further head gasket problems I installed some ARP head studs. These allow you to torque the head down tighter and don't stretch as much as the standard head bolts.
The gearbox was always noisy in 5th gear. While the engine was out I stripped down the gearbox and found that one tooth had been broken off fifth gear. Pretty strange for this to happen to the tough R154 gearbox. After a long search I found a new fifth gear and put the gearbox back together. Now it is quiet and smooth in all gears
Before all this (after only two weeks of ownership), the first diff was blown! I replaced it with another stocker which has thankfully held out for the last 18 months. Soon I will be replacing the standard Crown diff with a sturdier LSD.
