Yep, had a run over to Wakefield with a few blokes from work, and a couple of ring-ins...Other cars included '99 WRX, '89 Honda Prelude (actually a "stripped" track-only car), VX SS Commodore and a Monaro CV8...Oh, and my Cressida.
Some of the other cars there included:
BA XR6 Turbo (Only ventured onto the track once - spent the rest of the day parked in the pits )
Late model BMW M3 (Nice! - and fast! <==== That's me as it drove past me down the main straight! )
VX Clubsport - The driver of this one should have got out and pushed...We have some excellent video footage of me going around the OUTSIDE of this one through the hair-pin
Another WRX - Not overly quick; again probably comes down to the driver...)
WRX wagon - This thing was quite fast, and also went past me up the straight (Seriously, having ridden in a 'Rex later, I can appreciate now just how much grip these things have!!! )
Overall thoughts/notes etc.
Firstly, the Cresida created a bit of a stir when I took off for the first time - following the VX Clubsport. You could barely hear the HSV car, then you can hear mine revving to ~7000RPM - captured quite clearly on video - and I had more than a few blokes going "WTF" when I got back, and wanting a look under the bonnet One of the "rex drivers said "Oh, it's no wonder I couldn't catch you..."
The Cressida performed well and the brakes held up excellently! On stock brakes, I could only do 4-5 laps before brake-fade would force me into the pits, but with the new brakes, I was able to do 2 complete sessions (around 20 minutes each) without brake fade. In fact, the limiting factor now was my street tyres, which tended to "go off" markedly after 3-4 laps...
I could consistently out-brake the Commodores and wasn't far behind a work-mates 'Rex. (Having said that, I could NOT stick with that car 'round the circuit - I tried on one lap after he had gone by me, but almost lost it trying to follow the 'Rex's line).
I had a nice duel with the CV8 Monaro (235KW GEN3 with exhaust and 6-speed). He eventually got past me down the straight - after quite a few laps - and said afterwards that catching me was a slow process . Oh, and I owned the auto VX SS.
I had one real "moment" when I went through the "kink" at ~170KPH, then realised I'd over-cooked it, and had a major lock-up. I was heading straight for the sand-trap and was thinking "Get off the brakes..." I released them and re-applied them (the video clearly shows 2 distinct lock-ups), and I managed to modulate the pedal pressure enough to get it 'round the corner. (So I've still yet to venture off the track).
All in all, quite a good day. The Cressida acquitted itself very well, and proved itself more than competitive with cars having (supposedly) much better sporting "pedigree".
Unfortunately, I flat-spotted a tyre, and my diff has developed a minor leak (nothing some gasket goo won't fix). The wife has declared the Cressida's track days over now, so I'm going to do the KE70 Corolla as a track-day car towards the end of this year and into next.
