Engine swap .......need some help Wed, 21 May 2003 12:59 Go to next message
Hello

I own a Toyota Startlet EP71. Recently I bought the 4A-GE engine. I want to replace my stock engine with the 4A-GE. Since I have never done such a swap before, I wanted to know which drive shaft I need in order to built the 4A-GE engine in my Starlet EP71. And maybe you have some other practical tips or pointers before I go ahead and to do this swap. I hope you are able to help me. Thank you for your time.

Speedcore's right in that a 4E-FTE would suit it better as it'd bolt straight in.

I'm sure that a 4AGE can be fitted in but you'll have to fabricate custom mounts etc plus get it engineered.

No one's done one in Oz as far as I'm aware so you might be on this one by yourself alone. Confused

Thnx for the quick reply,

I was expecting that answer. The problem is I find that the 4E-FTE is extremely difficult to find. I live in the Netherlands and I can't seem to get my hands on a 4E-FTE. I bought the 4AGE from a good friend for a friendly price. I have been looking for some information to do this swap (4AGE in Starlet), and several people let me know that it's possible without breaking my wallet.

Some advice I received:
I must install 4A-GE engine complete with the transmission.
I need to use all the 4AGE engine mounts, reinforce them, and also it is not a bad idea to replace the existing braking system with EP8~, EP9~ series or AE~ series.

I'd like to know what you guys have to say about this, apart from what you allready said.

Thnx for your time.

Ahhhhh ok!!

Well I guess I better try to help someone from the country where my favorite type of music comes from!!

ROTTERDAM GABBER!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Ok there has been a 4A-GE 20V put into a EP91 here in Aust. and yes it was a VERY VERY tight squeeze!!

My next question would be if the engine bay of the 71's are even remotely similar to the EP81/91??

Thanks again for the reply,

At the moment I already have a 2E-E(EP81 series) engine built into my Starlet EP71. I also have the EP81 brakesystem built in. I do not know if the EP81 enginebay is the same as that of the EP91. Maybe you can tell me more about that.

Also if you have any more information about this engine swap I would be happy to hear from you.

Thanks for your time.

hi mate
the best way to start is to take the old engine out and put a block of wood etc the same height as the bottom engine mount where it nomally sits. then using an engine crane lower them both in or if to tight a fit drop the cross member off and take it up through the bottom{haha dont reading anything into the last} put the 4age in with gearbox and make your mounts so the engine sits exactly the distance centered that is needed for you driveshafts. if you want step by step as you are doing it just email me.
