Setting up an AE86 Sprinter - advice please. Thu, 11 September 2003 02:25 Go to next message
I have a bit of an ill handling Sprinter, which I would like to sort out. The car is almost never used as a road car, but must remain road registered. I use it for sprints, hillclimbs, motorkanas and tarmac rallies. I need it to be quick on the track and also quick on a reasonably bumpy road. At the moment, it laps QR sprint circuit in the low 64's on crap tyres. I am reasonably happy with that and it feels fairly good, with the exception of the lack of grip. On the road, it is terrible. It bump steers, bounces, understeers, oversteers and basically handles like a turd.

It is running big sway bars at the front and rear. I think this may be most of the problem. The dampers are Koni reds and the springs are an unknown rate. I suspect the Konis are rooted also. I am changing the tyres from 195/50/15 to 205/50/15 R spec. I will need some negative camber I imagine.

Can people with current or past experience in setting these cars up, please offer me advice on exactly how and what they would do to make it a good compromise for the road and track.

Cheers,

Cal.

As i said..

Fit 40 mm RCA's to the front

Fit traction brackets to the rear

that will cure a lot of the said problems

have you fitted an adjustable (or at least a resized) lateral rod/panhard rod? i remember having a lot more problems before i fitted it, as after being lowered for so long with the stock lateral rod, the rear upper control arms were bent & nearly all the bushes in the rear suspension worn worn to shite. that could have a hell of a lot to do with excessive bump-steer & poor traction/handling. (it did in my case at least)

the panhand rod replacement is a fallacy. Its only needed if you lower it 1.5 inchs or something wussy from stock.

if you really lower it the rod resets it self to the oem postion mine is low at rear (3 inches lower then stock) and i have OEM panhandrod and diff is centered and i dont have any issues.

an aftermarket adjustable panhard rod and rca's will fix the stability

change all the bushings and get some new tyres
change the springs to progressive wound ones and check your shocks out to make sure they aint fuxored

apart from that all i can say is maybe remove the swaybars? they will stress the other parts out too much if they are ultra hard and everythign else is soft and mushy or old

if your getting a "skipping" effect across tarmac under braking or power turn-in then id say this is causing the issues

the anti roll (sway) bars work to make the car reduce roll in cornering by acting as a "join" between the shocks to compress both sides not just one so its a "flatter" turn

obviously the outer wheel is going to be stressed more and if it cant cope (ie too soft) it will feed un-responsive and sketchy

at least thats what i thought Wink

hope it helps

its true! i swear to god Simon! Sad

virtually all the rubber bushes in the rear end were hashed & the two upper control arms were bent! also if you measured the distance between the guard & the rim, it was different on both sides as a result of the lateral rod being the wrong size... and my car was lower than 1.5" under stadard (more like 2.5")

what else wouldve caused the bushes to chew themselves out over time & the control arms to bend? (besides hitting a gutter or three! Razz )

i agree that if your lateral rod isnt throwing your diff out of centre, then it'd be a waste of money, but in my case it was definately contributing to problems with the cars handling.
maybe an isolated case in my circumstances, i dunno... *shrugs*

RCA's are Roll Centre Adjusters...

they're placed between the fron ball joint & the strut body to correct the cars roll centre. im not 100% sure on what a traction bracket is though...

i'd say that the stufed bushes and bent arms were causing ur prob and your new rod fixed it Smile
