The Thrid F@#king problem Tue, 14 October 2003 02:31 Go to previous message
They say these things come in three's

1. wiring problems - stranded in the dark

2. Brake problems - stranded in the dark

3. A lovely grinding in the engine somwhere - refer points 1 & 2

Coming home from work last night cars was crusing fine, stopped at a set of lights...fine... took off... problems. I heard a slight knocking/rattle as I shifted gears (about 4500rpm) somwhere in the vacinity of the engine/gear box, upon acceleration the noise went away but I took it easy.
the next set of lights the noise came back on deacceleration.
this got worse as I kept going to the point that the noise sounded similar to a truck compression braking or a diff very close to going. the noise goes away when accelerating but come on again once taking my foot off the accelerator. and also dissapears if I'm rolling with my foot on the clutch.

I'm after an opinion on wheather it is safe to drive or not (I was planning to put it in to get the clutch done this week) but I can't pin point if the problem is in the clutch/flywheel (bolts comming loose) or if it's a bearing in the bottom end of the engine (hopes not Crying or Very Sad ) and will the vibrations shake the crap out of the engine?
Can any of you more mechanically minded people diagnose this so I can either pull out the engine and fix it (rather not) or if it sounds like a clutch problem I can take it and get it fixed

the engine went in about 500km's ago (it's an 18R-GEU) d'oh

Help here is apreciated.

Cheers
