cool1 this is for you, i have a clarion CD player in my car which has been in for almost 2 years now and the first year it worked all the time everytime with no problems at all never even skipped when thrashing on rough dirt roads yet it started to play up and wouldn't play a cd but only when the engine is running if you shut off the engine it will play a cd with no problems but if the engine is running it will come up with either or two error messages one saying "TOC can not be read, cd may be upside down" and second is umm i can't remember but the point is it doens't just come up with the same error msg all the time but sometimes i might get lucky and it will actually work when the engine is running but 90% of the time it doesn't what could be causing this problem that it only does it as the engine is running could it be noise coming through the power line from the engine or something like that? anyway what are your ideas on the matter.

I would think that it is some sort of noise! The first thing I would want to know is what spark leads are you using?

They are called Top Gun for Toyota Celica 18-R engines but you bring up an interesting point as i have changed the ignition leads some time last year except i don't know when, i could work out if they have anything to do with it, i save all recipts from auto one so i can work out when i put them in and if someone is able to tell me when the Alex Lloyd Amazing song came out then you will know if it was at the same time as i think when i bought that cd it was the first time it started stuffing up.

alright i bought the leads on the 14th of the 7th 2001 alex lloyd-amazing was released on the 17th september 2001 so they are a fair bit apart but i think that was the first cd that played up, i can't be 100% is it possible it would take a while till problems started to pop up? anyway i have the old leads i can try putting them back in and see if it makes any difference

Damm. I have had problems like this before but it was caused by the spark plug leads! Using copper core leads are the worst for stereos and just about anything else electical! Another thing that may be the problem is the alternator! Try pulling the belt off and giving it another go! Also make sure you have a good ground between the stereo and the chassis of the car! And make sure that the antenna cable is firmly plugged into the antenna jack! Check the later before you spend time pulling that belt off!

It is possible that the CD player is going out of adjustment and when the engine is running and you are getting max volts from the alternator this is pushing the deck just out. The TOC is the table of contents ie the index which is read first. The first simple thing to check is to clean the lens on the optical block carefully...dust could be the problem, or take it to a TV/audio repair shop for a quote...might be time to shout yourself a new one......

i suppose one way to check that its not caused by viabrations or anything is to run it off a 2nd battery and see if it still works while the engine is running, anyway i'll check what you said this afternoon. i went to an audio shop about it and they wouldn't really help all they wanted me to do was give it to them to look at. i don't reckon its the stereo's fault as it works perfect no problems except when the engine is running. anyway i'll get back to ya

nope no luck, disconnected the alternator and it didn't make a difference except the car was running on 10V instead of 14V when the engine is running normally. i just can't work this thing out, it works fine with no distortion or hesatation except when the engine is running it doesn't want to play any cd's

I spose the next thing you could do is what you said and run the radio off a second battery of just take it some where to get it looked at! There is only so much you can do without seeing it!

Good idea to test for alternator or voltage problem by disconnecting it..this proves fault is caused by ignition...could be electrical noise eg inition system breking down, coming in on positive wire disturbing CD electronics. As a test, try connecting 12volt connection on cd player direct to the positive terminal on the battery (this would be a cleaner spot) and/or fit a choke/filter from Jaycar or Tandy.

Well thanks guys for your help but today i am a happy man. just got a phone call from Clarion about the email i sent to them a week ago and they asked me to send the cd player down to them, they will have a look at it fix and update it and send it back up to me at no cost now either they are just very good customer support or its because in the email i was going on about how if i can't fix this i will have to move to another brand as my friends have sony/pioneer and never have a problem so i said i'll have to move to one of them and well yeah. i think it helps to scare them by saying your going to not buy clarion anymore.
anyway i'm a happy guy. probably wont get the cd player back for months but hey at least i don't have to pay for anything and can listen to cd's once again )) they said something about they simulated the problem down there and its something to do with subsonic viabrations or frequiencys upsetting the laser so it can't focus and apparntly they can do something to fix that. anyway thanks for your help guys. and i'll let you know when i get it back and if it works or not. Thank again for your help guys.

Thats brilliant. I cant see many companies taking the time to try and emulate a problem like that work out a soloution and do it for free when the Stereo is out of warranty.
My next stere may verywell be a clarion with support like that.

I have had excellent customer support from Clarion Australia. I bought a secondhand tape/radio and emailed them and asked if it was possible to buy a loom or wiring diagram from them. They sent a new loom, photocopy of the wiring diagram AND the manual I didn't even ask for for FREE. Quick too. I was very impressed, as I told them I bought it secondhand and eveyrhting.
