Threw a timing chain
Mon, 01 December 2003 11:52
i have an 18r-c engine that threw a timing chain the other day.
as i was driving down the road doing bout 98km/h (why are you laughing, im serious!) i thaught to myself "gee, i hope that strong oil smell isnt comming from my car" when it didnt go away....for about 5 km, i decided to pull over. as soon as i took the accelerator off and the clutch in, the engine stopped dead. i popped the bonnet to see the timing chain saying g'day behind the fan.
i was wondering if anybody knows how much damage i would have done to the pistons and valves? and whether its possable to just replace the cogs and timing chain?
or alternatively, is there another engine other than from the 18r family that can bolt strait in?
PS the engine was having some ignition troubles a week before it happened. it decided to run on only 2 cylinders for no aparant reason. after fixing the timing, there was a small nocking, like loud pinging in the engine that i thaught was to do with ignition timing. would this have had any effect?
