TrueTrac installed! Mon, 08 December 2003 02:59 Go to previous message
Hi all,

I finally got the poopra back on the road on Friday night with a whole bunch of new stuff installed. Kings springs (lows), KYB shocks, all new Nolathane bushes, and of course my brand new TrueTrac helical LSD centre with 3.5:1 gears from an RA65 Celica. I got a wheel alignment done on Saturday morning and then spent most of the weekend driving around, grinning from ear to ear. Very Happy

Well obviously the suspension is a massive improvement over what I had (ie stock worn out 20 year old components) and the car handles better than a barge-arse Supra has any right to. The improvement is most noticeable in high-speed cornering - the car feels well tied down and there's plenty of grip. Amazingly the ride quality hasn't suffered much at all, and you only really notice the difference when driving on really crap roads.

Oh yeah, did I mention it's low? Damn, it's low!

Now for the TrueTrac. Apparently these things are basically a locker, complete with tyre-chirping u-turns and ridiculous dorifto action in the wet. It's possible that it will loosen up a bit as it wears in, but for now it's an absolute hoot. Very Happy Of course traction is heaps better now that I have a properly functioning LSD, and the car takes off from low speeds with minimal wheelspin - it just gets up and goes at a frightening rate!

The 3.5:1 gears were definitely a wise investment, and they suit the power delivery of the 2JZ much better than the 4.1:1 gears ever did. First gear is now actually useful, and it accelerates much harder because the second turbo has time to kick in before redline! The best part is the much more relaxed highway cruising; the engine is loping along at 2500rpm instead of 3000 at 100km/h. I expect this will result in better fuel economy but I haven't had time to test that yet. Of course it also means the car gets up to silly speeds much easier than it did before! Shocked

Anyway, I'm a happy camper despite being several thousand dollars poorer. Now to tackle that brake upgrade...
