AE86 Exhaust

I am looking to fit an exhaust system to my 4AC AE86 (ok, everyone can stop laughing now). I have read advice on these pages about diameter, extractors, resonators, etc. I have decided on the following setup:
2.5" press bent, 2 resonators and a canon tip. No extractors.
However, when I went to talk to the guy at the exhaust shop, he started on about how 2.5" will make the car lose power, and he also recommended extractors. What I'd like to know is your opinions, as you guys actually drive 86's and I know alot of you have good mechanical experience. Another question is to go over or under the diff? Who has done what? I have lowered the car 2", and the guy reckons there's no way that I should go under.
I have plans to get a better engine, I am really just playing around at the moment and not spending too much money. I have already got rid of the standard filter, and done the other small things that were recommended in other threads.
Let me know what you guys think, and what you have done. Thanks.
