temp controller for thermo fan?

i've got two fans (12" and 16" Davies) inside the bay of the 18R turbo RA40 (just) - and am looking for a temp switch to control the larger fan? the smaller fan runs 100%.
i've got a mechanical thermostat that gets shoved inside the upper radiator pipe where it attached to the top tank - but it tends to leak under pressure (was bought with larger fan) plus it's bulky hardware.
has anbody know of simple controller that uses electrical sensor?
i recall seeing a DIY kit on autospeed that used a sensor mounted in the airflow to control a fan but cannot find any temp-control kits on their site now.
at the moment i'm manually driving the fan from inside car- but it's a pain at times plus at night you gotta search in the dark for the switch.
do any of the newer (e.g. post 18R) engines use a simple thermo switche to drive thermo-fan relays? I could put a T-conntector at the current temp gauge sender and have two sensors - but would prefer using a sensor that can sit in air flow or be bolded to the head near the front ofthe engine.
tia,
charles.
