18rc idle/rev problems

Hi
Well just after the recent queensland cruise i blew my headgasket. Now this is the second head gasket i have replaced and the first that has had problems with.
The car when cold has a bad miss up through the rev range and the car will backfire out of the carby. when warmed up at idle the car has a lumpy idle and is perfectally smooth just past idle 1200 revs ish right up until 49-5200 revs where it seems to not rev any futher. (like a rev limiter in an efi car).
I can see that the spark is arcing across at the coil was going through the coil to the pos side of the coil. now the coil is replaced it still goes to the pos side but through the rubber from the lead.
also could i have a manafold leak? would this cause my symptons?
and i noticed when i got the manifold gasket there was no separation between the exhaust ports 2 and 3 on the gasket could this be the problem? (the car has extractors)
Any susgestion is appriceated as i am running out of ideas
