easiest way to check inlet valves are working?

Hi,
In my 5 cylinder 1jz-gte I have narrowed the issue down to no fuel or no air. I will be checking the injector this arvo and I was told one way of checking to see if the inlet valves are opening.
I was told to get a piece of wire with a small right angle at the end of it, place it in the spark plug hole facing the inlet side and turn the harmonic balancer around until it gets to the inlet stage and i should be able to feel the valve pushing the wire down slightly. Does this sound like a good idea? Any other ways besides pulling the head off?
thanks
Chris

i would pull the head off anyway as it could be something else that is your problem, such as collapsed water jacket making a cylinder not fire anyway, and if it wasnt at least you would be able to see all the valves moving, or possibly they are moving but one or two are bent
better to know for sure than to guess and hope

sounds a bit unlikely that the valves arent opening...
i mean, is an overhead cam engine, theres not a whole lot getting in the way of the cam opening the valve. simply taking off the cam cover and watching the cam rotate onto the valve bucket should be enought to tell you whether its working or not.
id be much more inclined to check the fuel injector - more likely its buggered/stuck/malfunctioning than no air getting in.
have you checked spark? checked the coils? checked signal to the coils?
have you pulled the plug and coil out and watched it spark to earth?
i say youve got a bloody long way to go before having to pull the head off

I just checked the spark, coils and the signal to the coils and they were all good.
Compression is good in all cylinders.
I pulled the plug out and it was sparking when on the ground.
I unplugged the coil and ran the car for a second and then pulled the plug out and there was no fuel on it. So then i pulled the plug out and ran it for a sec and there was no mist coming out of the plug hole.
Then i checked that there was power on the terminals for the plugs and the cylinder that isn't firing had the same as another one. This leads me to believe that the injector is clogged or something.
I am going to start a new thread on the removal of the injector.
Thanks

if compression is good, then air is getting in ok.
if you have spark, then it can only be fuel.
get a long screwdriver and put the end on the injector in question while engine is running. put your ear on the other end (the big end ) and you should easily hear if it is clicking or not.. check against the others..
if in doubt, take them to get checked by a decent injector servicing shop. get them cleaned anyway
undo fuel rail. pull injector out?

undo your tank fuel cap before unplugging injectors, this will release pressure in the fuel system and avoid you getting a squirt of fuel everywhere

wtf are you smoking?

if you want to depressurise the fuel system, start the car, then remove the efi fuse from the main relay/fuse box in the bay. the engine will soon die. try starting it several times (it should splutter and die, and eventually do nothing but crank over)
THAT is how you depressurise the fuel system
