The ma61 would kick its ass i every aspect, except for looks, i do rate the MA70 aesthetics over the MA61, but the MA61 has its own coolness appeal.
Plus the MA61 weighs a few hundred KG less than the MA70.

the seats are almost identical.....except ma70 was available in leather and with electric adjustable seats.

getting a 1jz ma61 on the road for under $10k would not be easy
I'd go for the ma61 too - it's a lot less porky. In terms of looks, I think they both have strong points, and are both pretty sexy (other people will tell you the ma61 is ugly as sin, but they're all wrong )

1jz Ma61 will be quicker due to weight difference, but a more difficult conversion compare to the MA70. Plus you could always just buy jza70 - saving money and time by not having to swap engines etc. Or if you only want a 1jz get a Soarer!
Ma70 is a better cruising car (true "Grand Touring" car) with more room, adjustable steering wheel, electric seat (man i love that thing!) and although heavy is made to feel a lot lighter with the 1j under the bonnet. They handle brilliantly too with an excellent suspension setup and TEMS shocks (not all have these). Plus diff's are stronger and there's a lot of otions around. If Iwere going to do a conversion to an ma70 I'd go with a 2j rather than a 1j. Upfront costs would be higher and it would be a lot harder but people have done it before and you can fit the 6 speed in it!

The MA61 is the clear winner for price and performance (thanks to its much lower weight). The MA70 has the obvious advantage of being newer and thus has a nicer interior, but that's not to say the MA61 isn't nice; it still has all the goodies like aircon, power windows, central locking, electric mirrors etc. As for looks that's purely subjective so you'll have to make up your own mind.

There seems to be a lot more manual jza70's around than manual Soarers. You can get the Jza70 type R which all were manual (pretty sure) and had Bilstein shocks, Recaro seats, Analogue (dial type) Gauges - which I think look heaps better than digital dashes - and a few other goodies.
I doubt you'd get much of a jza70 for $10K, more like $15K will buy you a nice example.

I'm nearly a year into my 1JZ => MA61 conversion, so no, it's not quick. But I reckon when done it will rock!
JZA70 has the advantage of having the engine you want already in. And usually you'd be very lucky to make your money back on an engine conversion, so JZA70 would probably be better value resale-wise. But JZA60 has gotta be a heap more fun to own & drive!

I've driven an MA71 and later driven the same car converted to a JZA70. The car is much nicer to drive with the 1JZ, very smooth and loves to rev without sacrificing much in low-rpm drivability. The JZA70 is definitely the pick of the Mk3 Supra's.

I myself own a jza70 r model, there are some auto ones as i have seen them myself, they have factory, bilstein, mine does not have tems, but has got recaros, etc the normal R stuff. I payed $11,500 for mine I live in W.A. only things had done to it was pod, timer and cat back 3". and works absolutely fine, the guy had it in the paper for about $13,000. but hell i love my car... I have not been in a MA70 to tell u the difference. but in the end its your car man so it is up to you. Sure the ma61 would be a sleeper with a 1j and probably quicker than a JZA70 but I will stick with my car, my opinion anyway, as much as I like sleepers though...

Jza70 is the pick, They out handle the ma60's and have a lot of good features such as ABS and tough drivelines (auto AND Manual).
In this case ( though I have a factory 5 speed) I dont think i would be that disapointed with an auto version either (heaps cheaper) they have proven themselves to be very quick at the drag strip and quite capable everywhere else.
