 buying a W* g/box - what to look for???

Hey guys,
i've finally got around to sourcing a gearbox...a guy i know has both a w57 & w58 for sale. Depending on condition i'll take the better of the two. Now when it comes to inspection is there anything i should be looking out for with either of these boxes? is there anything exterior i need to be looking for? or is it a case of not really knowing until you pull the thing apart?
i dont really know what im meant to be looking for...i will be taking a mate along but i want to at least have some understanding of whats good and whats not 
any help would be greatly appreciated
