5m-e air pump and cold air intake

a few questions:
the air pump stuff, and the air injection into the cynlider head...
what does it do? can it be pulled off simply, and is it worth pulling off? ive seen reports of 5MEs with a cold air intake, 2.5" exhaust and the air pump removed getting 0-100 in about 8.5 seconds...
also, a stupid question, but is a cold air intake merely a pipe that gathers intake air from outside the engine bay, so either from a panel or from somewhere like the front lip of the car?
