Too many headaches under the bonnet (18R-C) Tue, 17 February 2004 11:23 Go to previous message
Hello all, I am newbie to this forum and would like to say hi to
all. I am the (un)lucky owner of a November 1980 ra40 hatchback
celica. I have read a lot of posts here and people seem to have the same or similar faults I have.
I am regularly blowing the exhaust flange gasket and hot box gaskets.

Backing off the accelerator quickly from hi speed makes the car
snap crackle and pop like a fuel cut isn't working (not sure on that). flange bolts keep undoing themselves and flange gaskets keep turning into white powder.
at present my car in on ramps engine half dismantled.
I have extractors in the shed, motivator 2" 4,2,1.
which if can be used will go straight on to my existing exhaust; 2" pipe to a dynamax 16" ultra flow muffler.
while writing this post I got a call from a mech telling me my
inlet manifold carb face is warped so theres a few problems solved there.

questions I have is:
1. Is it really safe to put extractors on 18R-C's?
2. Will removal of the EGR system increase combustion temperature
therefore increasing the risk of a cracked head? if so is there
any way of keeping the combustion temp down, or would i be better
of setting up a cold air intake?
3. If extractors can be used without any risk would they benefit
from heat insulating bandage?
4. Is the Flashlube Lube system a good idea or not? any experiences? I have the little 500ml bottle that can be plumbed into the intake.
5 I have a spare g/box from a 1979 imp jap hatch does anyone know
what if any differances are between the local W50 and the imp W50?

if anyone has any questions comments or answers they'll be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance
