Legalities of fibreglass / Carbon fibre panels Mon, 01 March 2004 21:07 Go to next message
What exactly are the legalities of the use of fibreglass / carbon fibre panels on a road car?

and more along the lines of the removable front end style of body panels and having say a rear hatch made from CF.

I'm trying to work out how to reduce the rusting issues with an up and comming project and the only things I can come up with is either fix the flaws that exist, don't let water near it, or build it out of somthing that doesn't rust.

I doubt that either are legal on a road registered vehicle, since they have not passed crash test requirements.

Yeah that's what I figured.

Damn
Track car or road car hmmmmm.....

or build and crash test a few Rolling Eyes

Wouldn't that mean that fibre glass bonnets, front guards and even front bars would be illegal? where is the boundary of fibrglass/cf (limited to non-structural/non supporting panels) for road use?

If it's from factory it's prolly been crash tested, I'm not sure if fg/cf supporting glass is a good idea unless there was steel involved anyway (which defeats the purpose I'm after) front quater panels/bonnets may be used by some manuf. to reduce impact in a crash where as fg/cf would shatter rather than crumple. depends on weather the car was designed to take impact in the body/chassis or in the panels as well. This I don't know.

i believe frp/carbon bonnets/doors are illegal on the grounds of structual integrity. bumpers, guards and other panels which do not have underlaying reinforcement have no safety requirements other than to prevent any sharp/protruding objects from being exposed.
