stupid mkIV noise

a mate's mk iv is making a weird noise. a good mechanic has checked it out, said it's not the suspension. it only happens when going over bumps, and some days it does it, saome days not. some bumps it does, some not. no apparent regularity, but when it's doing it, it can be fairly regular on victoria road.
I's sort of a dull thump - comes from drivers side of the engine bay. I was thinking that maybe possibly it could be the drivers side engine mount coming loose... but if that was the case it would rattle at times other than going over bumps, yes? I'm kind of stumped...
any ideas?
