sandblasting a car Sun, 21 March 2004 08:37 Go to next message
Just wondering if this was a good way to go to get my car right back to bare metal to find all the problem spots with it. Ive been quoted $150/hr and was told 1 hr tops to do my car as its just gonna be a shell. Once i get it done should i just primer it to stop rust or is something else needed. All opinions appreciated. This is a ta23 with a 18rg"t"eu in it by the way. So i want it to look nice.

Umm sand blasting isn't the best thing to get done to a car Confused Sand leaves the metal all pitted and just totally screwed up. You can however get it blasted with nut shell which is a bit softer than sand although I'm still not sure this is better than the ol paint stripper.

you could sand blast it, then go over it with wet and dry, sand blasing will piss off all the paint and rust(if any), if you sand it back afterwards it will make it all smooth again, then you could primer it. what you should do are some tests. say take some peices of an old body part and san blast one then sand back. use paint stripper on the other.
the advantage of sandblasting is it is quick and will get rid of surface rust.
we use a sand blaster at work to blast alternater housings, work really well and leaves it ready to paint.

Ive been told that sand/grit blasting causes heat buildup in the panels that then warps them Sad
Hence why most places still use good old sandpaper.

Sand blasting is good for small rust spots, but blasting whole car is bad idea. Sand blasting wears down the metal quite bit and that's why rally guys often gets their cars water blasted(not probably right term). Warping is the another problem.
Paint stripper is the trick but remember that healthy layers of paint below fresh paint is the best rust protection.

Sand blasting will change the surface tension of the metal. THis can lead to warping in panels. Also you need to clean the sand from whatever parts you have balsted. It will build up in areas with folded metal, so you need to go over the area with an air compresser to blow all the excess sand away. Also it will leave small undulations in the blasted area. For panels you will need to sand this out. So its probably not a good idea to sand blast the outside panels.

Maybe using glass beads would be OK. Good panel beaters and spray painters should have the low down.

Not to hyjack the thread but where does acid dipping come in here? or is stripper and sand paper still the best option?

Acid dipping is also a good solution, but it has its cons.
You need to cut holes in any panels so that you can respray hidden panels. Acid dipping removes all paint from the car. Some of this can be difficult to respray and in smome cases impossible without cutting some large holes in panels, sill areas etc.... Its still a lot of work.

I believe that stripper, sandpaper and the wire brush are the best way to go in 95% of cases.

Just for the record, most places that can acid dip a car body can also dip the car in a primer or galv if you want.
