RT142 Corona diff

Hi all,
I spent Saturday scrounging at the wreckers, mostly looking for an RA65 so I can steal its diff. I didn't have any luck, however I did find an RT142 Corona which has the same 22R-E engine as the RA65 and the IRS setup looks identical as well. This leads me to believe that the diff may also be the same (ie 3.5:1 F series), BUT there was no axle code on the build plate!
So my question is, does anyone know what diff type/ratio is found in an RT142 with an automatic transmission? I'm getting desperate for a 3.5:1 diff but I don't want to fork out $200 for this one only to discover it's a T series!

Norbie... RT-142 corona's fit into two distinct categories AFAIK.
1/ Local made/built. Has craptacular live axle BORG WARNER grinding diff. Usually you find them with discs, but some have drums (like the ST-141 does)
2/ Fully imported (usually "Avante"). These have complete IRS F series rear end!!. Nothing IRS was made in australia by borg warner, and nor am i aware of a T series IRS....
If all else fails norbie, take a trip to your local library, and borrow a Corona workshop manual!

As soon as they realise it's IRS, the price suddenly goes through the roof.

I usually look stuff up on Drive.com.au
they have neat details like power, weight, compression ratio, track, options adn final drive ratios.
Actually it's pretty comprehensive. Although it's not always accurate, like my infotech teacher said, garbage in, garbage out.
If it is a f-series you'll be smiling, i'll let you find out the ratio.
http://www.drive.com.au/buy/market_value/car_detai ls.asp?nvic=LC9&make=TOYOTA&model=CORONA&a mp;series=&year=1987&body=
You could probably buy a whole Corona for not much more than $200, just find one with a stuffed head gasket.

"Final Ratio 3.42"
Noice!
I reckon I'll be visiting that wrecker again on the weekend. If they don't want an arm and a leg for it, it's MINE ALL MINE!!

ok, according to my book that came with my car, a 2.4L sedans had the irs rear end. which to my knowledge is a F series. I've gotta take the cover plate off my diff to redo the seal there so I'll be counting and measuring etc when I do that, I also wanna know what gearbox is in the car, w55/57/58??
but the diff ratio has to be either 3.7 with a w58 or 3.5 with a w57/55 by my shoddy maths.

Gidday
Unless Toyota had different rear ends the diff for a rt141/2 is a BW 21 spline diff - no stronger than a T series.

yeah, like i said there are TWO types of RT-142's. The imported with the complete IRS F series, and the local with borg warner () live axle rear.
P.S. Bugman - you will have a W55 in there... looks the same on the outside as a W58 (and is) but has an alloy sandwich plate. Hence you'll have a 3.5 ratio!

Cool, didn't know the autos had a different ratio. I still can't find one though, auto OR manual. I had no idea these things were rare, but apparently they are!

Yep! I need a taller ratio for the Supra, preferably 3.5:1 or 3.7:1, and no-one seems to sell them new so second-hand is my only option.

There is no IRS Borg Warner diff (not in Coronas anyway); if you have IRS it's a Toyota diff, and since you have the 2.4 litre engine if will be an F series diff, same as the RA65 Celica and MA61 Supra. LSD centres can be found second-hand or new; as a matter of fact there's currently a group buy for F series TrueTrac's, so you might want to get on board!
