W57/58 rip off?

Hey y'all.
I'm after peoples opinions as to whether I'm being ripped off. I had 7MGE engine put in my ma70 Supra by a mechanic recently. My manual gearbox's lay shaft bearings were gone, so I asked him to take the box out as well. He sent it off to his usual gearbox people.
I get a call saying they wont guarantee the box unless they recondition it for $950, or they can get me a 2nd hand box for $750. I opted for the 2nd hand box, but when I got on the highway I found that my rpm had jumped up by 300 at 110kph. Ofcourse I immediately logged on to toymods and checked out the gearbox guide and saw the different 5th gear ratios for the W57 and W58 boxes. The mechanic said he'd noticed 'celica' in raised lettering on the box, and put me onto the gearbox guys.
They are saying that, yeah it is a W57, but both boxes are exactly the same. They claim they've opened up my box and compared it to a 57 and they're identical aside from the steel sandwich plate in my old 58. They say the speedo is out due to the different cable gearing.
I checked the speedo, and it was under-reading by 6kph at 110, but seemed fine at lower speeds. Ofcourse the speedo could have been out before, as I have 17" mags. What this all boils down to for me is-
1.Is it reasonable to supply W57 in place of a W58, when its clearly stated its for a MA70 Supra? 2.$750 seems reasonable for a 2nd hand W58 with warranty, but wouldn't a W57 would be a lot less? 3.Are they full of shit about the speedo cable & both boxes being the same? Thanks for reading all of this!
