Thermostat?

Hey guys,
My friend was driving his Magna down to Canberra. Anyway, I look across at his dash (since he's pretty new to driving) and I notice the temperature gauge sitting below cold.
I told him to pull over. Popped the bonnet and the radiator was freezing cold.
Anyway, sitting there for a while, the temp gauge started to creep up.
We started driving again and the temp gauge dropped down again.
Been driving around the last few days and the car takes a long time for the needle to go up, and doesn't go up that much.
I'm suspecting that the thermostat is stuck wide open. Would this be right?
