stupid question #1 for the night

gbox oil filling rules...
1. drain gbox oil
2. remove gear stick & oil filler plug
3. fill gearstick hole until oil comes out filler hole
4. replace gearstick & filler plug
does this sound good? (a little fried, want to make sure I get it right)

2. replace drain plug!
I think this one's important enough to have it's own step.

why would you fill it up until it comes out the tube? don't you just fill it up until it says it is full on the stick?

Aye RWD only.
Its because the fill plug is at a bitch of a point on most RWD cars.
Like on my sprinter its almost flush with the floorpan, so you cant get a bottle in to fill it up. Either you use a pump or you jack the rear end of the car up and fill through the gear selector hole, much easier.
Just dont splill it, makes the carpet stink.

Greg - the car should be level when you do this, so jacking up is not necessary. I find that across the dip in a driveway is a good place, and girlfriends, mums, dads, the dude from across the street make good sighters. If it is quite enough you can hear the oil drip into the ice cream container, or stormwater drain (NOT recommended) from inside the car.
Do not try to pour too fast or Norbie's string of coarse language will surely ensue.

I've got a catchpan - being a car nut is my one vice as an otherwise environmentally friendly person
also have a funnel, to hopefully keep my brand new carpets clean

handy hint - undo the filler plug out before removing the the drain plug. it really sucks to drop the oil then find you cant undo the filler plug to pour it all back in
although you could always pour it through the shifter.

I know jason
the funnel is to catch the first and last bits - I've made the mistake of filling too fast witha funnel, and ended up with a 22R covered in oil

what is the syringe you speak of?
I changed my diff oil last week and I got a pointy bit like the ones on a tube of silicone and fitted it into the lid of a coke bottle poor the oil in coke bottle and squeeze it in. worked alright And I kept the lid and can use it on a different bottle next time. Same sort of thing?

You could use a syringe or a home-made contraption like that, but you'll be there all day filling up a W58.

Or you could make a nice oversight like i did when pulling apart my S-series rear yesterday and forget that the entire axle shaft is encased in oil. I just pulled the axle out and out comes this smelly diff oil all over my leg

Hey, what oil are you using for yout gearbox, I have been wondering if it's worth trying something with a different EP number with the hope of improving the shift quality.
Any Suggestions????

Back off topic - 4L for a diff. What is it; a Dana 6500000?
Anthony, I tried a mix of auto trans and ST90, shift seemed to be pretty good. I don't think that other parts of the gearbox liked it (synchros were pretty stuffed by the time that I pulled it out).
