headlight wiring problem? Fri, 21 May 2004 22:43 Go to previous message
Ok, I don't expect anyone to be able to give me an answer to this but if anybody has any pointers it would be great!

So a couple of months ago I was taking my car for a drive when I hit a pretty big bump in the road. It was at night and my lights were on. When I hit the bump, the dash lights went out it said I was in Reverse (on the dash) and the hazards lights on the dash are stuck on (not flashing. But they aren't actually on) I was pretty sure it was a short somewhere so I jiggled some wires around in various places until it turned off. I couldn't find exactly where it was though so I just taped everything up in there so it can't touch anything. So it was fixed at that stage.

A couple of weeks ago, I was driving on the highway with my lights on when I hit a bump in the road and it is doing the same thing as it used to? Except now it does it permanently whenever you turn the lights on. So I have checked around the same area as last time and nothing makes a difference.

If you have the lights or parkers on with the ignition off, the dash will come up strange like above mentioned until you put it into reverse gear? Then the dash comes up alright but there is still not enough power to turn the headlights on. I have checked the fuses in the engine bay and they are recieving some power but not enough.

If the ignition is on and you turn the parkers on, the dash comes up strange unless you put it into reverse. Then the dash lights come on as normal but there is no power in the fuses going to the headlights at all. The parkers are on however.

I forgot to mention that when the hazard lights and reverse lights come on the fuel pump also comes on. It is wired directly to the ignition.

If anybody has any idea of where to start with a problem like this I would be extremely grateful. I tried for about 4 hours last night with no results.

I disconnected 3 wires going to the shifter on the top but it was still sensing which gear it is in from some other wires which join with the main loom under the car. I couldn't pull these out.

sorry for the long post but I really don't know what to do. I took it to an auto elec and they said it could take days to fix and cost $500 or more! That is why I am trying to get somewhere first.
