 ma70 knocking/clunking noise

Hey all,
had this knocking noise for a while now, just got louder recently  for some reason, it stops when i turn the car off and the turbo timer takes over, turn the key back on and it comes back 
i thought it was the auto g/box when it first started to happen, cos it would only do it in gear ( drive, 2nd, 1st and reverse) but now i reckon it may be the power steering pump or the like?!
cos it sounds like its on that side of the motor under the power steering fluid bottle.
i know its gonna be hard to help cos ya really have to listen to the noies it self.
EDIT: Could it be the oil pump? would that make a knocking noise if thats on its way out, or already gone? also, how hard is it to check it?
but any help/ideas would be great, thanks!
