NRMA Open Road letter Thu, 12 September 2002 10:30 Go to previous message
Here is a letter i found in the Open Road magazine issued by NRMA.

Price them off the road

Whatever happened to the government's policies
against macho, overweight, overpowered overconsumptive supercars?
In the 1970's, the high powered supercars of the day
Holden Monaro, Falcon GT and Valiant Charger - were forced off
the road by government pressure on the manufacturers.
This was because; firstly, they were unsafe in inexperienced
hands, and secondly, they were gas guzzlers.
Now we are being inundated with V8 cars and utes, twin-turbo's
and similar insanely quick cars.
At a time when we are supposed to be concerned about global
warming, depletion of oil reserves and safety on the roads,
I can't see the need for any of these vehicles.
Governments should once again seek to control the availability
of excessively powerful cars by fiscal means- high insurance,
high TPI, ect.

Personally i hate people with these stupid views, firstly you should be aloud to drive whatever car you want weather its a snail of a car or a rocket, sure for high powered cars there should be some sort of system where you can't drive one until you have sufficient experience but in no way should they ever be cast of the roads simply because they are a highly powerful car which someone obviously loves and wants to drive on and use the roads just like everyone else does.
