Boomerang Alarms: any good?

Does anyone know anything about the boomerang alarm/immobiliser? I'm considering getting one. I've been quoted $1000 including central locking (my car currently doesn't have central locking at all).
Would the pager work if I parked my car at westfields and did some shopping??
Is there any other better alternatives?
Any reviews/feedback would be appreciated.
