What causes battery acid splash?

Hey guys, might seem like a simple enough question to answer, but I really have no idea. I have an NRMA emergency battery sitting in my (RAV4) engine bay, and I've done nothing to it since it was installed about 6 months ago. Only reason it was installed was because the orig. battery sh!t itself, overflowed with battery acid and wouldn't crank.
Now I have this NRMA battery and I'm having the same problem, but on a lesser scale. It's still spewing small amounts of battery acid onto the left side of the firewall.
Aside from the obvious answer (get a decent battery), who knows what could be causing this, and how can it be remedied?
Cheers.
