What are the steps to take when buying a car from a car owner??
Deposit- how much deposit should i give? How can i be sure the person doesnt run away with my money?
Do i go to his place or does he come to mine? or do we meet at a neutral place?
What is the "road transport department" body called in victoria??
Sounds like stupid questions but im new in australia. Pls feel free to give me a few extra tips.
Thanks guys...

Deposit - Take his licence, get his name and licence number... that way u have proof of who he is... deposit is only necessary if u want to pick it up later on... write down a sort of reciept on a piece of paper, get him to sign it...
Meeting: Whereever you want.... doesn't matter
Road Transport Body - VicRoads
good luck... it can be either a really painless experience or be a very painfull one.... good luck be confident be friendly and u'll be fine

deposit depends on total price, perhaps take around 5% of the asking price when you inspect, so 100 for a 2000 car.
i like to inspect at the other persons house unless it's drastically inconvenient - people are gonna be less likely to rip you off if you know where they live.
all in all you don't hear too many horror stories about the purchase process, more about a car dieing after, so make sure you know what you're lookin at and do a thorough inspection

Go look at the car, get the guys name, take down the Engine Number and Chassis Number (available on the rego papers), go home, and give REVS a call.
They can tell you if the car has any money owing on it.
(I think its called REVS over east, I know it is here in the west)

yeah its REVS in NSW, but i've had a problem with revs when i was selling my last car.
gave the buyer all the details over the phone, he called them and they said that it didn't exist. he came to look at the car anyways and gave them another shot, and gets told that it does exist and nothing is owed on the car, go figure?

] Vicroads Registration info
Have a look at this and print off the pdf files. It gives all the legal requirements for registration transfer in Vic.
You can ring them with the VIN and Engine number and they will check the register to see if the vehicle is reported as stolen or written off.
Cheers,
Dan
